Daily Zen 20101026

Now and then
You must long for the
Freedom of the deep woods
I, too, cherish
Such thoughts

Cold Rain

Cold Rain

Soon it will turn to snow.
It beckons the chill, not blossoms
A pattering drizzle that matches
The traveler’s grief.
Heard by all alike,
Rain dripping from the eaves,
But to him who sorrows a
Sound that breaks the heart.

– Ryusen Reisai (d. 1365)

This poem really spoke to me today. I don’t know if it will rain today, but it is cloudy and cool. A storm is moving up the east coast of the USA so perhaps we’ll get more rain, which we sorely need. We traveled home from my little sister’s memorial service in the rain…a traveler’s grief.

Brewing Tea

Brewing Tea

Green clouds spiral and twine,
Are drawn into the wind in a long stream;
On my cup’s surface the faces of
White foam flowers are cool;
The mountain moon comes into my window;
Plum tree shadows move;
Pouring again and again into my unglazed cup
I sip the lingering fragrance.

– Betsugen Enshi (1295-1364)

I came across this poem at Daily Zen.
