It’s All About Perspective

“When any calamity has been suffered, the first thing to be remembered is how much has been escaped.” — Samuel Johnson 1709 – 1784, Essayist

I found out a couple of weeks ago that an injury to my right knee would likely require surgical repair. I immediately began to feel despair, fear and uncertainty. Why? Well first of all I’ve never in all my 40+ years had surgery. I’ve only had to get stitches twice. Never had general anesthesia.

That’s all well and good. However, both one of my sisters and my nephew have both had this surgery, and then continued their respective colleigiate and high school athletic careers. I haven’t lost a limb or limbs like so many of our soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Ths may cost me a couple thousand dollars, but at least I have health insurance, thanks to my wife’s job, and won’t have to pay the whole bill out of pocket. And in any case it won’t be tens of thousands of dollars for maajor surgery and a lengthy hospital stay. So, it is all about perspective.
